Chapterling

Terms of Service

Effective On publication
The plain version: You're the grown-up in charge. You buy it, you can cancel in one click, and if the first episode doesn't land we'll make it right within 14 days. The story is for your family to enjoy, not to resell. Here are the details.

1. Who we are, and agreeing to these terms

Chapterling is a service operated by MBD Media LLC, a California limited liability company (doing business as Chapterling), 2108 N ST STE N, Sacramento, CA 95816 ("Chapterling," "we," "us"). By creating an account, purchasing a subscription or gift, or otherwise using Chapterling, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

2. Who can use Chapterling

You must be at least 18 years old and the parent or legal guardian of the child the story is for. You are the account holder and are responsible for your account, your login, and everything done under it. Chapterling is purchased and managed by an adult on a child's behalf. Children do not create accounts, log in, or interact with us directly.

3. What Chapterling is

Chapterling is an ongoing, personalized, serialized children's story. You tell us a little about your child; we write and illustrate a story in which they are the hero, delivered episode by episode (by email and on the web), where earlier choices carry forward so the story remembers. Every story passes a safety review before it reaches your child, and a real person checks anything it flags. Stories are works of fiction created for your child's enjoyment.

4. Your child, and the details you give us

The details you choose to share are used only to write and illustrate the story, as described in our Privacy Policy. Appearance details are treated as story art-direction to create an illustrated character: Chapterling produces a stylized illustration of a character, not a photorealistic likeness of your child. You confirm that you have the right to share the details you provide, and that you won't submit anything unlawful, hateful, or harmful.

5. Plans, billing, and renewals

We offer:

  • Monthly: $15/month, billed every month.
  • A Year of Stories: $120/year, billed annually.
  • Gift a First Season: $29, a one-time purchase (no subscription).

Subscriptions (Monthly and Annual) renew automatically at the then-current price until you cancel; the renewal terms are shown at checkout and you agree to them before you're charged. Payments are processed by Stripe. We email you before every charge, including before each renewal, so there are no surprises. If we ever change a price, we'll tell you in advance and it will only apply to renewals after that notice. You can cancel anytime, in one click (see Section 7). Applicable taxes may be added.

6. The 14-day guarantee, and refunds

We want your child's first episode to land. If it doesn't, tell us within 14 days of your first charge and we'll refund it in full, no forms, no hassle. Beyond that window, you can cancel anytime to stop future charges; we don't provide prorated refunds for the current period unless required by law. Gift purchases are covered by the same 14-day guarantee. The terms of this guarantee are shown wherever it's offered.

7. Canceling

You can cancel anytime, in one click, from your account (the same easy way you signed up) or by emailing support@chapterling.com. Cancellation stops future charges; you keep access through the end of the period you've already paid for. When you cancel, we delete your child's information on the schedule in our Privacy Policy (within 30 days), and you can delete everything immediately at any time.

8. Acceptable use

Please use Chapterling as intended. You agree not to: resell or redistribute the stories or artwork commercially; copy, scrape, or reverse-engineer the service; submit unlawful, hateful, harassing, or harmful content; impersonate anyone; or interfere with the service's operation or security. We may suspend or close accounts that misuse the service.

9. Who owns what

We own the Chapterling platform, the underlying story engine, templates, and brand. You own the personal details you provide about your child. Your child's episodes and illustration are created using AI tools (including Anthropic and Google) and then reviewed and edited by us; to the extent any portion is generated solely by AI, it may not be subject to copyright. We license to you the finished episodes and illustration we prepare for your child for your family's personal, non-commercial use: read them, keep them, print them for your own home; just don't resell or publish them commercially. Some portions may be subject to those AI providers' terms. To create and deliver the story, you grant us a limited license to use the details you provide for that purpose only, as described in the Privacy Policy. We do not use your or your child's information to train AI models.

10. Children's privacy

Chapterling follows the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The parent or guardian is always the account holder and the consent-giver; your purchase serves as verifiable parental consent, and we collect details about your child only after that step. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture and your one-click deletion controls.

11. Availability, and changes to the service

Chapterling is a new and evolving service; we're welcoming our first families now. We may add, change, or discontinue features, and we aim to give reasonable notice of significant changes. We don't guarantee uninterrupted availability, but we work hard to deliver every episode on time.

12. Disclaimers

Chapterling is provided as is and as available. The stories are works of fiction for enjoyment and are not medical, psychological, educational, or other professional advice. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and we don't warrant that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

13. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, MBD Media LLC will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or any loss of data or goodwill, and our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless MBD Media LLC and its members, officers, and agents from claims, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your misuse of the service, your violation of these Terms, or content you submit in violation of these Terms.

15. Governing law & disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.

Let's talk first. If something goes wrong, email support@chapterling.com before filing anything formal; most issues are a quick fix, and we'd always rather just make it right.

If we truly can't resolve it together, disputes are handled in the state or federal courts located in California, or in small-claims court, if you'd prefer.

16. Changes to these Terms

If we update these Terms, we'll post the new effective date here and, for material changes, email you. Continuing to use Chapterling after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
